Effect of thermal undulations on the rigidity of fluid membranes and interfaces

چکیده
2014 Thermal undulations of fluid layers, whose strength depends on layer rigidity, are shown to reduce the effective rigidity. The decrease is calculated in a first-order approximation for weak rippling. The undulation modes are defined as director waves so that the curvatures satisfy the superposition principle. J. Rigidity and Irregularity Effect on Surface Wave Propagation in a Fluid Saturated Porous Layer
The propagation of surface waves in a fluid- saturated porous isotropic layer over a semi-infinite homogeneous elastic medium with an irregularity for free and rigid interfaces have been studied. The rectangular irregularity has been taken in the half-space. The dispersion equation for Love waves is derived by simple mathematical techniques followed by Fourier transformations. It can be seen t...
متن کاملComputer simulations of self-assembled membranes.
Molecular dynamics simulations in three dimensions of particles that self-assemble to form two-dimensional, membrane-like objects are presented. Anisotropic, multibody forces, chosen so as to mimic real interactions between amphiphilic molecules, generate a finite rigidity and compressibility of the assembled membranes, as well as a finite line tension at their free edges. This model and its ge...
متن کاملEstimation of the bending rigidity and spontaneous curvature of fluid membranes in simulations.
Several numerical methods for measuring the bending rigidity and the spontaneous curvature of fluid membranes are studied using two types of meshless membrane models. The bending rigidity is estimated from the thermal undulations of planar and tubular membranes and the axial force of tubular membranes. We found a large dependence of its estimate value from the thermal undulation analysis on the...
متن کاملStatistical mechanics of membranes: freezing, undulations, and topology fluctuations
Membranes are two-dimensional sheets of molecules which are embedded and fluctuate in three-dimensional space. The shape and out-of-plane fluctuations of tensionless membranes are controlled by their bending rigidity. Due to their out-of-plane fluctuations, flexible membranes exhibit very different behaviour to flat two-dimensional systems. We discuss three properties of membranes: (i) the reno...
متن کاملDecrumpling membranes by quantum effects
– The phase diagram of an incompressible fluid membrane subject to quantum and thermal fluctuations is calculated exactly in a large number of dimensions of configuration space. At zero temperature, a crumpling transition is found at a critical bending rigidity 1/αc. For membranes of fixed lateral size, a crumpling transition occurs at nonzero temperatures in an auxiliary mean field approximati...
